playgroup is for mommies and babies

Sheila and Yoko

Thomas and I have been in a play group for over 2 years now. Each week we would meet with our mommy and baby friends. Now our babies are little pre-schoolers going to school together. I have realized over this baby bonding mommy time that I have made some of the greatest friends since moving to LA.

Sheila. She tells me what to make for dinner and how to make it. We have similar taste in many things. She is intuitive. I value her advice. She is honest. She tells me how it is. She has a rebellious nature. She has hipster hair without even trying. She has stacks of polaroid pictures all around her house. She has great lips. We talk of kermudgin's, kim chi and doll making. She teaches me how to take care of myself .

Aniko. She is always a step or two or three ahead of me and can finish my sentences for me. She doesn't like the mold that grows on gourds at the pumpkin patch. She is loyal. She doesn't seem afraid to try anything. She looks like my sister Annie. She loves her kids something fierce. She rustles papers during meetings to keep busy. I love her orange curtains that she made in the girl's room. She helps my brain function.

Claire. She is always humming or singing a song behind her breath. She always fixes me something wonderful to eat on a beautiful plate. She is witty. She has fits of laughter. She loves navy blue. She has a crinkle in her forehead and looks off to the side when she is thinking of what she is going to say next. She listens. She's smart and some times she uses big words that I don't understand. She has framed photographs of family covering the walls in her bathroom.

Ronna. She cares about people. She has a house with a view. She is a Chicago gal. She introduces me to new music. She lets me borrow tablecloths. She has a great sense of style. She has beautiful skin. We both have admitted and diagnosed ourselves with a learning disability. She has a great laugh.

China. I love that she moves slowly and with precision. We laugh at the same things. She has wisdom beyond her years and there are no false pretenses. I love that she left the green velvet wallpaper in her bedroom. I trust her. I could tell her anything. She isn't afraid to announce that one of her favorite hobbies is to drink beer. I think I could hang out in a room with her doing nothing for days and not get sick of her.

a house in beachwood canyon

I haven't felt like blogging much lately. I have things going on in my head but I don't feel like forming them into words to write down. January has never been my favorite month. Life is busy and I feel like I don't have time to finish anything I start. Something else always starts or needs to get done and I have difficulty prioritizing. It all just doesn't seem to slow down. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things with writing because I like to keep track of what we are doing but for now I am going to wait until I feel inspired.

The other day I was inspired for awhile. I was driving in my car thinking of living here in LA and how it has become home to me. I thought of this picture in my iphoto so I ran home to find it and I found it in the Oct 2005 folder. It is a picture of a wee lil' Thomas at a friends house in Beachwood canyon. We had just been in LA a little over 4 months and it reminds me of the apprehension and excitement I felt during this time. Thomas had just been born, I had long hair and I was healthy. Andrew Bird was all I wanted to listen to. Our apartment felt fresh and new even though it was old. We only knew a handful of people. Yards were abundant with foliage I had never seen before. Ella loved the ocean and bugs bunny. Wade was consumed with a new job. It was an exciting time. The city was ours to explore.
